Many would say it’s a pipe dream, but what I’ve been realizing (over many years) is that we truly have the decision making power to decide what we want to do with our own lives.

The “safe” option has always been to work for an employer at a job with set wages and benefits. I’ve been doing that for the better part of my life. I have always worked for someone else for the last 18 years. Well, life decided to throw me a curve ball…….

Back in early 2008, an existing medical issue unexpectedly flared-up again to the point that made it impossible to abide by the strict attendance policies and strict demands of my job.

I was stuck in a chair all day for 8-10 hours with little freedom of movement. This took a toll and in essence was the thing that contributed to my overall health issues.

In short, I was rewarded for my years of loyalty, dedication, and hard work by being denied the proper short term disability benefits and subsequently lost my job (due to the attendance policies). A truly no-win situation.

This was very hard to deal with, but faith tells me that everything happens for a reason and sure enough…..this terrible circumstance was the catalyst that started me on my journey to a different working life…..working for myself.
